Long time, no post

Posted in Gaming, Movies, Personal on July 14, 2010 by Aunion

Well, it’s been a while since last I posted and much has happened since. Let’s start with PC news: still playing WoW on occasion, though I guess I’ve been struck a bit by pre-expansion hiatus. Currently leveling a tankadin with heirlooms, solely through instances, lots of fun though rather slow going. Beats running up and down STV anyways. Oh… and while speaking of WoW… I’m going to BlizzCon! Ticket price for that isn’t THAT bad… at least not compared to how much it’ll cost me to fly from Helsinki to Anaheim… but I guess you need to do some crazy stuff every now and then, it’s only money after all ;p. If you’ve got any suggestions for questions to ask the devs if I get a chance, feel free to post them in the comments section, could use some ideas for that.

Also had time to try out L4D2 and while I still don’t think it deserves being called a new game, but rather an expansion to L4D, I do admit that it’s pretty great. Especially versus mode, though if I could I’d never play as human in versus, playing as zombies is SO much more fun.

Biggest news is probably that I got a PS3. I’m a console hater by nature, always get very indignant when some popular PC franchise move to the consoles… like Outcast or GTA etc… but I finally caved. Too many games I want to try which are never gonna see the light of day on the PC. So far I’ve had the chance to play through God of War 1-2 (still waiting on a good amazon deal for 3), Uncharted (got 2 sitting on the shelf, but need a break after first one, it’s rather hard for someone used to the easy aiming on PCs :p), inFamous (played through it as a hero, can’t wait to do as villain, but has same aiming issues as Uncharted) and Army of Two – 40th day (great fun, especially getting to replay campaign with all the weapons you collected first time around). Also played a bit NHL10 and Smackdown vs Raw 2010, though those aren’t really games you can “play through”. Tried Little Big Planet, but I guess it’s more of a multiplayer game which you have to play with the right person to enjoy. Played through first boss in Demon’s Soul; that’s one hell of a hard game… I’ll probably get back to that later, but for now I’m more in the mood for fast & easy games :p. That’s it for the PS3 for now, expect more updates on that in the future.

Movies? Went to see Prince of Persia last week, was better than expected, maybe on par with second Pirates of the Caribbean movie… not great, but entertaining. Also seen Iron Man 2, pretty entertaining and pretty much what you expect these days from a Marvel summer blockbuster (though it was waaay better than Wolverine Origins, which was just crap). Gonna go see Shrek 4 tomorrow; hopefully it’s more like Shrek 1 & 2 than 3, loved the first two, but hated the third one. Then there’s Predators and A-Team… at least I can’t complain that there are no good movies this summer (well, can’t say if they’re good yet, but stuff I go and watch anyways :p).

So… I’ve been told that I don’t write anything personal here… guess I’ll try to add something. Got home to Helsinki from my vacation in Algarve, Portugal last week, was really looking forward to a bit cooler weather, but guess what? Hottest summer in quite a while, my apartment was just too hot to live in. So, second day I got a portable air conditioner and it’s been a bit better ever since. Also had the bright idea today to go on fencing practice today despite the heat, I mean surely they’ve got the big air conditioning systems running in this weather? Well, actually they don’t and this was the sweatiest fencing practice I ever had, even though I only fought 4 matches up to 5 points… I just hope the weather cools down after this :p. Anyways, that’s it for personal stuff for now, maybe more on next time I post (God only knows when that’ll be :p).

Oh… one last thing. Those who have read this before (who am I kidding, I’ve got 2-3 readers at best, all of them close friends :p), might have noticed a bit of a change, namely that I haven’t linked any of the game titles or movies. Well, so sue me, I’m lazy :p. If there so happens to be a popular outcry for me to being back the links that may happen, but if as I suspect there’ll be no comment about it one way or the other they’ll just stay out in the future.

My Xbox360 Controller

Posted in Gaming, Movies on April 17, 2010 by Aunion

Well, a couple of weeks back I suddenly got the crazy idea to go buy a xbox360 controller for my PC (yes, I do an unfortunate amount of impulse buying; but surprisingly often don’t regret it, my Razer Naga being a good case of this (might write post on that later)). After a quick and easy setup I was ready to hit the games.

I started off by buying the Lego Star Wars Complete Saga on steam. While this is a game I’ve previously played with a keyboard (well, I’ve played the old version, but this is pretty much the same), it was an interesting and surprisingly pleasant experience to try it with a xbox360 controller. While there were no real problems with playing it on the keyboard, this was much easier and smoother.

Next, I tried a bit of Assassin’s Creed 2, which as I’ve mentioned in my first post is made mainly for the controller and badly converted to keyboard. Couldn’t be bothered to play it that much, having not too long ago finished playing it, but from what I did try it seemed much better. Also considering trying it out in Batman: Arkham Asylum, think it would work extremely well there.

Currently using it in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, invaluable there, since the controller to keyboard conversion is really the stuff of nightmares in that game. Enjoying the game… though it is a tad on the annoyingly difficult side even on normal difficulty… at least for that type of game. I prefer games of that type to be more along the lines of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was a great hack ‘n slash game.

Recently saw the new Alice in Wonderland which despite is hugely famous cast was rather underwhelming. I wonder if Anne Hathaway’s White Queen was high throughout the film… I’m pretty sure she at least was very evil. Also saw the new Clash of the Titans which was pretty much exactly the thing I expected… a rather mindless action movie; but sometimes it feels good to see one of those.

Anyways, that’s it for now… next one in a couple of days, a couple of weeks… or worst case, in a couple of months. Next one will probably focus on my Razer Naga.

My blog 2 – The Quickening

Posted in Gaming, Movies on March 20, 2010 by Aunion

Well, been a bit over a week since my first blog post and so I guess it’s time to post again. Been busy with this and that… and a little bit more of this… but now I’ve got a few minutes, so let’s start covering my experiences since last time.

Last weekend was a kind of movie weekend (inspired by the Academy Awards), I watched 3 different movies; Up in the Air, It’s Complicated and Julie & Julia. Up in the Air was a good movie, part serious, part comedy, all good… really enjoyed that one. It’s Complicated was more of a pure comedy and a great one at that. It’s good to see Steve Martin again and it’s always nice to see Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep. Talking of Alec Baldwin, I’ve really enjoyed seeing him in 30 Rock, a show I just recently discovered. Julie & Julia was… good. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, it was a nice movie… but it suffered a bit from being over-hyped. Oh… and tonight I watched Pixar’s Up, which I really enjoyed :).

So… on the game front I started out playing a bit of the now free Dungeons and Dragons Online. Well… free with premium purchases you can buy and I can definitely vouch for those services bringing in the revenue just as well as a monthly fee; found myself buying access both to 32 point builds and the monk class immediately. Neither is essential for playing, but… it’s what I wanted to do, so… :p. Spend my time in the game with a friend (let’s call him Mr Alpha since that’s the name he generally goes by on this kind of sites), doing all the “noobie island” dungeons on every difficulty from normal to elite. It’s a nice system, with every quest being an instance in itself, gives them a bit more of a story feeling than the typical “find and kill 20 tigers” stuff in most MMOs. Once away from the “noobie island” we decided to take a short break; with a free to play MMO you don’t need to feel stressed to play all the time to get the most of it, you can play a little now and then, whenever you want :).

Me and Mr Alpha also started off on the Warhammer 40 000: Dawn of War II campaign on Primarch difficulty. The first time I played through it I just took the basic normal difficulty and blasted through it at ease, but primarch really offers a nice challenge. We have to keep coordinating our attacks and Cyrus the scout who was rather worthless on normal since he’s quite low on direct damage is suddenly one of the best units to have around. Really enjoying the campaign and can’t wait to get to the Chaos Rising campaign (you get to keep your original team from the first campaign ^^)

What have I done other than that? Not much, but something ;). I’ve played a bit of Dragon Age: Origins, trying to complete the campaign with a human noble so I can become king ;). Also purchased the Awakening expansion… can’t wait to try that out when I’m done with my 3rd playthrough of the original campaign (city elf rogue, human mage, human noble). I’ve also stumbled into a really addictive iPhone app called Angry Birds, seen the movie Percy Jackson & the Olympains: The Lightning Thief (the name’s a mouthful and the movie’s nothing spectacular, but better than I expected and quite enjoyable) and received my new creative headset, which is the most comfortable and Awesome headset I’ve ever owned.

That’s all for now, be back in a week (or more or less… you never know :p).
